Residents’ Questions Go Unanswered at Winston-Salem, NC Sustainability Public Hearing

There is too much included in this plan for it to be passed without the public’s ACTUAL consent. Those consenting at this meeting all had interests in the plan. Hardly an accurate test of public opinion!

“proponents of the plan were prepared and vocalized support for the plan, including planning board staff, the chair of community appearance commission, members of the home builders association, those is support of the protection of green space, transportation lobbyists, lobbyist from “Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods,” rep. from Historic Resources Commission, Founder of Winston-Salem Greenways, the town planner, and more. The concerning matter with the Legacy 2030 meeting is that when citizens brought forward questions on the feasibility of the plan and those behind the plan-making, their questions were undermined or simply left unanswered.”

The board said that they would bring the plan to a final vote during their August or September meeting. Please call and let them know that the public deserves a fair hearing and more information before this plan passes!

During the July 26, 2012 meeting of the Winston-Salem City-Council planning board, the proposal for the Legacy 2030 plan was brought forward for public hearing. Many proponents of the plan were prepared and vocalized support for the plan, including planning board staff, the chair of community appearance commission, members of the home builders association, those is support of the protection of green space, transportation lobbyists, lobbyist from “Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods,” rep. from Historic Resources Commission, Founder of Winston-Salem Greenways, the town planner, and more.

The concerning matter with the Legacy 2030 meeting is that when citizens brought forward questions on the feasibility of the plan and those behind the plan-making, their questions were undermined or simply left unanswered. Tell the Winston-Salem City Council that the public deserves a fair hearing before passing this plan!

Many of the “guidelines” outlined during the city council meeting painted a picture of the town “incentivizing” the growth of business and development that pertain to their interests, and stifling those that do not. They even described allowing for certain types of development before allowing development in other areas. Those areas which they discuss “incentivizing” include -manufacturing in specified fields, such as medical & preferred retailers, such as grocery -encouraging more vertical development (structures, sites, and neighborhoods) -establishing elec. hybrid vehicle stations -transit routes -upgrade & expand convention center -prioritize greenway etc.

Here is a link to the plan which we are told in the video will be used as guidelines for future development: http://www.legacy2030.com/
